Destiny and Life's Journey

What is the Purpose of Life?

What is the Purpose of Life? Is it part of our Destiny?

“Destiny is something not to be desired and not to be avoided; a mystery not contrary to reason, for it implies that the world, and the course of human history, has meaning.” Dag Hammarskjold (Swedish Statesman and United Nations Official)

Do you believe in destiny? It is one of those questions that is asked hundreds of times with as many answers as the number of times the question is asked.

Destiny is defined as the events that will happened to a person in the future. So, do we create that future or is it pre-determined? Is there a deeper meaning to the things that happens on the way to destiny? Are we guided by some cosmic force or are we quietly going along our path choosing turns and stops at random?

A made for TV movie released in the last 1990”s titled “Stolen Women: Captured Hearts told the story of two white women (Anna Brewster Morgan and Sarah White--played by Janine Turner and Jean Louise Kelly) who were kidnapped by a band of Lakota Sioux warriors during a raid in 1869 Kansas. Anna’s first encounter was on the wagon train she was on while going to join her brother. Sioux warrior Tokalah (played by Michael Greyeyes) is about to shoot her put notices her holding a book (Bible). He looks into her eyes and leads the other warriors away. Later he finds her and takes (kidnaps) her from her home along with her friend Sarah to the reservation. After a time Anna begins to feel a kinship with her surroundings--she begins to learn the language and dress like the other Sioux women. Sarah, however, never gives in or gives up. She is determined not to forget who she was, who she is, or where she came from.

Anna and Sarah, at one point, try to escape but Tokalah finds them and in an angry exchange he reveals, what he believes is, their destiny. “You took me from my home“, says Anna. “I gave you a better home”, Tokalah responds. “I never asked to me taken from my husband.” “You did ask, I heard you”. He then tells her that he had seen her in a vision when he was a boy. That she was holding the book. “How could I kill you--you are a part of me. You were always a part of me.”

This movie, which is supposedly based on a true story, could very easily support the theory in favor of destiny--or does it? Later when the women are rescued by General Custer Anna appears with a face full of war paint and ash. She tells the men “I’m going back with you to save lives (Indians). I am in mourning for I’m leaving my heart and my people behind.” One of the men asked sarcastically “you liked it didn’t you, living as an Indian?” Anna answered “it was my calling/”

So, was it destiny or was it choice? I would love to know what you think. I look forward to hearing from you.

Love to all,

Nonna

I think it comes down to an interpretation of what we are. Our ego-influenced (thought-pattern) self (or little self) is continually be provided with situations where we have to make a choice (even choosing not to choose is a choice) But we also have a Higher Self (the God part of us) If the little self identifies with the ego and finds itself in conflict the the Higher Self, we are faced with choice. Go with ego, or go with Higher Self. In most cases we have absolute freedome to choose.

But I think that freedom has certain pre-set parameters. The Higher Self endeavours to coax us to stick to -possibly a plan we set our for ourselves before we were born. If we're right on track, then things come very easily; so-called coincidences occur, opportunities open up readily. Life runs smoothly and we are largely free of thoughts of angst. We're happy.

But if we're off track, the going gets very difficult. Nevertheless, it is always the INTENT not the outcome, which is important to how we are progressing towards the evenutual dissolvement of the ego and the coalecence of little and Higher Self - the ultimate goal.

Thanks Tom! I remember reading that trouble and difficult has a way of doing 2 things... (1) trying to teach up something (2) and/or trying to get us back on the right path. I love your word "intent". That you for your very insightful comments. They always make me look a little harder and a little closer.

In hindsight I can see the seeds of destiny weaving their way throughout my life. I think that who we are leads to our destiny. For example when I was young I wanted to be a healer. I now make herbal remedies and sometimes heal people's ailments, and healing things have occured when I pray.

Years ago I took a job planting trees in Scotland and am now studying the environment with an aim to encourage tree planting projects. The person I was then forshadows who I am now. I have the free will to be me or not to be me.
